Looking for an alternative to Brother ControlCenter?
Brother ControlCenter is the free software that comes with your Brother scanner. So why would you be looking for an alternative? There are two main reasons people look for an alternative:
The Control Center™ Serial Software provides easy access to all the features of the Promira™ Serial Platform (with I2C or SPI applications installed), the Aardvark I2C/SPI Host Adapter, and the Cheetah SPI Host Adapter. Within minutes, developers can make full use of I2C, SPI, and GPIO functionality. Multiple Promira platforms, Aardvark. The new Control Center in macOS Big Sur is a very convenient grouping of commonly-used functions, plus it's now easy to drag those controls out to the menu bar. It's just far less obvious how,. Open the ControlCenter by clicking HD = Library = Printers = Brother = Utilities = ControlCenter = ControlCenter. The ControlCenter application will be loaded near the system clock. Click on the ControlCenter icon located in the Task Tray, and then click OPEN to launch the program window.
- How do I remove Brother Control Center from my Mac? I can find the program on my computer to remove it, I don't need it, and it launches an annoying program with a pop-up window every time I turn on my computer. I'm using a MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite v.10.10.2.
- The Brother Printer Control Center gives you quick and easy access to every printer function there is. It only excludes several particular document printing tasks for a productivity app that you currently use. Accessing the Brother Control Center involves clicking the CC4 icon found on the system tray.
- ControlCenter no longer works on their operating system (like on macOS Big Sur)
- They want more features from their scanner than ControlCenter provides.

Why VueScan is a good alternative
Brother has recommended that customers use iPrint&Scan application or Image Capture. But you might also want to use VueScan Scanner Software. VueScan works on over 6500 scanners, even scanners that are no longer supported by their scanner vendor, so you can use VueScan with any scanner you might own.
You might also want to use more advanced features than came with ControlCenter. You might want to put multiple photos on the flatbed and have VueScan separate them automatically - you can do that with VueScan. You might want to extract text from your documents (OCR) - you can do that with VueScan. Download VueScan and start trying all the advanced features today.
ControlCenter Pros
- Comes free with your scanner
- Offers basic scanning features
- Easy to do a quick PDF scan
ControlCenter Cons
- Doesn’t work on macOS Big Sur
- Lacks more advanced features
I have a MFC-8660DN multi-function printer. There's a piece of software called the Brother Control Center that lets you initiate scans from your desktop and route the scan to a specific application. To get it...
- Visit this Brother site.
- Choose 'USA'
- Choose your model number (MFC-8660DN)
- Choose 'United States'
- Choose 'Drivers' then 'Mac OS X (10.5)' then 'English'
- Then choose the 'Scanner Driver' and download it, then install.
- You'll have to restart your computer and a dialogue will come up. You can have the printer associated by name or IP address. I chose IP address. Then I added a name of my computer so that you can use the printer interface to send things to a particular computer.

Update - A few weeks later I started having trouble accessing the scanning capabilities from the Mac. I spoke with Brother Support and they took me thru the following re-installation steps, which solved the problem.
- Delete the 'Users/YOUR_USER_NAME/Library/Preferences/Brother' folder.
- Delete the 'Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/Brother TWAIN.ds' file.
- Delete the 'Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/ControlCenter' and 'Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/DeviceSelector' folders.
- Restart computer.
- Empty your trash.
- Re-install the Control Center following the steps above.
