Microsoft Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) allow IT Administratos to remotely manage different Roles and Features in Windows Servers 2008,2012 or 2016 Technical Preview from the own own computer. Base on your Windows Servers and your OS in your PC you must download and the appropriate version of Remote Server Administration Tools. For example if you have Windows Server 2008 R2 you must download the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7.

In previous articles i mention several times how can download Remote Server Administration Tools but i don't have explain how install and use it. Today i will explain the installation , how can enable Remote Server Administration Tools on Windows 10 and what has change from previous versions.

Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) Background The Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) have been with Windows since Windows 2000. On various versions of Windows the tools are sometimes included and sometimes they need to be downloaded from the Microsoft website and installed.

Install Remote Server Administration Tools

Download Remote Server Administration Tools
  • Download Remote Server Administration Tools from the following link
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45520
  • Start the Installation of WindowsTH-KB2693643-x64
Remote
  • After while you will get a Windows. Click I Accept.
  • Wait to finish the installation
Administration
  • After finish it will prompt to restart your PC.

Enable Remote Server Administration Tools

Administration
  • After the installation completed successfull you must enable the Remote Server Administration Tools for the Roles that you want.
  • Right Click in Start and Select Control Panel.

  • Select Programms and Features.
  • Select from the left side Turn Windows Features On or Off.

  • Scroll Down and find the Remote Server Administration Tools
  • Expand it and select the Roles and Features that you want to manage remotely.

Roles and Features that Remove in Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 10

Additionally, you should know that RSAT for Windows 10 CANNOT manage anymore :

  • DHCP Tools. Dhcpmgmt.msc is not available in this release of RSAT, but equivalent Windows PowerShell cmdlets are available.
  • IP Address Management (IPAM). IPAM tools are not available in this release of RSAT.
  • Network Policy Server Tools. The NPS console is not supported on a Windows client-based operating system, and will be removed from future releases of RSAT.
  • Routing and Remote Access Tools. Routing and Remote Access Tools that are GUI-based cannot be used for remote configuration in this release of RSAT, but the equivalent Windows PowerShell cmdlets are available.

Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 SP1 comes with “support for remote management of computers that are running either the Server Core or full installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2, and for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008,” Microsoft explained.

“Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003 can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1, although the Server Core installation option is not available with the Windows Server 2003 operating system.”

Not all Windows 7 SP1 customers will be able to leverage the Remote Server Administration Tools.

According to Microsoft, the management solution is designed to play nice only with the Enterprise, Professional, and Ultimate SKUs of Windows 7 with SP1.
